Survey on the situation of harassment in the European Parliament

Between 26/06/2023 and 05/07/2023 we collected (preliminary) data on the situation of harassment in the European Parliament, as experienced by it’s staff and MEPs. Within a week time, we have collected 1000 responses (roughly 10% of all EP staff have responded in the first week) to our survey, which was sent by email to the whole Parliament. The survey is still open for answers and we continue to collect data.

The purpose of the survey is to collect data on whether people have experienced harassment, in what form it took place, and if they have witnessed harassment in their work environment. The survey comes at an important time within the EP, since it’s Bureau (the sort of ‘Board’ consisting of MEPs from all political groups) will decide in a meeting on Monday 10 July on proposals to reform the EP’s anti-harassment procedures, which have not been reviewed since 2018 in the aftermath of the #MeTooEP scandals that hit the Parliament hard.

Until today, the institution has never collected any data or evaluation of the situation of harassment, despite numerous calls (in plenary) to do so, to be able to see the scale of the issue. With our survey, we want to shed some light on all the suffering that lies beneath the surface and is often ignored or swept under the rug. This data shows, however, the massive scale of the issue of harassment, which can no longer be ignored. We need to do right by victims and create a safe workplace for everyone!
